  • Purpose: CBT-I is a structured, evidence-based approach specifically designed to treat chronic insomnia. It focuses on changing thoughts and behaviors that contribute to sleep problems.
  • Components: CBT-I includes various components, such as cognitive restructuring to address negative sleep thoughts, stimulus control to strengthen the association between the bed and sleep, sleep restriction to increase sleep efficiency, and relaxation techniques.
  • Effectiveness: CBT-I is considered the gold standard for treating chronic insomnia. It has been shown to be highly effective in improving sleep quality and addressing the underlying psychological factors contributing to insomnia. It can provide long-lasting results even after treatment ends.

Sleep hygiene provides general guidelines for healthy sleep practices and can be a helpful first step for individuals with mild sleep problems. However, for those with chronic or severe insomnia, sleep hygiene is not enough and can even exacerbate sleep issues. CBT-I aims to provide long-term relief by addressing the root causes of sleep disturbances.
